Risk and Needs Triage™: Fostering Evidence-Based Placements in Criminal Justice

Diversion of drug possession offenders from incarceration to community-based programs is increasingly common at the state and local level. Yet decision makers lack a rational, evidence-based system to guide placements in ways that protect public health and safety without straining budgets.

Science is now pointing the way. Rigorously grounded in scientific evidence, the Risk and Needs Triage, RANT™, is a decision support tool for judges and other criminal justice decision makers. By identifying the risks and needs that can influence prospects for success, RANT helps match drug-involved offenders to the community corrections programs best suited to their needs for supervision and treatment.

RANT was created by the Treatment Research Institute (TRI), developers of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), one of the most widely used assessment tools in the field of addiction.

"RANT has assisted in streamlining our operations and is yielding useful empirical evidence about our arrestee population and how we might best serve them."
